Should Hostel Guests Expect WiFi in the Rooms?

I feel that if you offer a service it should be complete and work well, otherwise expect complaints and the resulting reviews. In the instance of WiFi, if you offer the service in the reception/bar/restaurant/games room...whatever you have then it should also be offered in the rooms. Guests come to a hostel/guesthouse and want to relax and feel at home; that includes sprawling on their bed checking their facebook...Give people more than they expect and they will be happy and talk about you to others.

Short answer YES, WiFi (if offered by the accommodation provider at all) should be available in the rooms.

In my hostel no WIFi in the room only at public area,such as bar,chatting room,front desk area.

Some might argue that if the wifi is free then the guest’s can’t complain. But we all know that’s not true. :)

A new service called Hotel WiFi Test lets guests test the speed of an establishment’s wifi and then posts the results on social media sites. They hope to pressure accommodation providers into improving the wifi speed through public exposure.

The service includes a tickbox that allows the user to include the hotel’s Twitter handle in the message, alongside direct integration with Foursquare.

They use information about the surroundings, such as the network that has been connected to and other wifi networks in range, to ensure that the test was actually run in the hotel. That’s good, because otherwise this could easily be abused to falsely damage a hotel’s reputation.

What do you guys think about a service like this? Is this a form of positive pressure from customers, or does this cross the line? Do you think it would work to improve wifi speeds in hostels? Would you mind having your guests post speed tests for your hostel’s network on Twitter and Foursquare?

Not only is FREE wi-fi expected by backpackers, having internet access in room would be a huge advantage. If is not that costly to provide wi-fi in rooms, it requires more hardware than software. Backpackers who are experienced in IT networks could probably set it up for next to nothing.
