We offer power sockets both in our lockers and by each bed. This goes down very well with guests. At the end of the day, the new, younger, tech savvy backpacker is wanting all of this, whether we understand it or not. I'm not sure restricting their want to spend more time on laptops/tablets/phones is for us as owner/managers to control. Social networking is the thing of the 20 something generation. To control or deter wifi access would just upset the guest.
Unlimited internet downloads is still expensive in Aus/NZ so not many places offer it free. We do, but phones make internet so accessible that it can put a strain on bandwidth, especially around meal times. Spoon in one hand phone in the other. Ever notice this? We often see people connected to two devices at once! We offer the fastest internet available and still get complaints of the speed, even though it's free!
To be honest, the only thing we find annoying is when a guest gets the access code and goes right onto their phone while we are still checking them in. They don't listen to our helpful information and inevitably come back later asking questions about the very things we told them. I'm sure this is common everywhere. We now give the code as the last thing before we show them to their room.
I like the idea of the USB outlets... might just steal that one!
