Does anyone have suggestions for squeaky doors and beds?
I think WD40 works well on door hinges. It doesn't take that long to spray all the door hinges, and makes a difference in how well guests sleep :)
Has anyone tried WD40 or another lubricant on squeaky dorm beds?

I had a really squeeky bed in someone else's hostel once. It turned out that the noise was coming from the contact of the ladder and the bed. The owner wrapped some electrical tape around the bar where the two touched to add a little non-metalic padding, and it solved the problem. I never would have thought of electrical tape as the answer, but for a quick fix it did the trick.

We used to have notoriously sueaky beds - WD40 did nothing to ease the noise. The problem was with the demountable fittings used to hold the bed together; they simply were not man enough for the job. We now have much stronger fittings and the beds squeak no more.

Several times in hostels I've found a squeaky door, thought about what that would mean at 0100h, and gone to the staff. They, of course were quite unaware of the problem because they dont sleep in the room. They say yes, we will fix it. Then 10 other jobs turn up and they forget about it. So I ask for some oil to do it myself. Usually they can't find any. Next time I'll bypass all this and use my own solution (though it was someone else's idea!) --- cooking oil. :)

It might be good to check the type of vegetable oil before applying because I think some types of oil leave a residue when they dry. (e.g., flaxseed/linseed oil)
