I would design it so that everyone has to walk by reception before entering. It will probably reduce problems -- depending on the location. (Unregistered guests, the occasional prostitute in the dorm room, etc.)
Hey everyone, thanks for all your help so far, I´ve signed the deal with the constructor and works start next week!
I wanted to ask about your opinion regarding guests/facilities control. My property is 20 m long and 12 wide, 2 floors. The question is, should I keep all the traffic to the second floor thru the reception? Or should I do stairs on the backyard/kitchen to shorten the walking distance from it to the upper rooms? I'm not concerned about safety issues, but about keeping on our sight everyone who's going up.
Thanks!

One option is to have a keycode access/key access on the backdoor, only checked-in guests can use it. then i dont see big problem in it.

Well, in that case guests could still sneak people in their rooms...In case visitors can come to the backyard for BBQ's or parties.

I've worked in a couple of hostels with this kind of setup. It can work, but in big cities guest will occasionally bring in outsiders.
A couple of scenarios I've seen are:
I'm not saying not to do it -- only mentioning a possible drawback if in the hostel is in a city... :)

if you are not looking to have mor than 100 people
:eek:def every traffic pas by reception easier to control and no need for second stairs
but you also should check your local fire regulations

Definitely you have to make people pass through reception for many reasons.
1st. For safety, to know everyone coming in/out.
2nd. To be in touch with guests, know what are they doing, where have they being and to show them interest in their stay.
3rd. If there´s success on the 2nd item, you will be able to sell tours, activities or book next hostels for them (Every guest has a need, every solved need could be money and someone happy, word of mouth, etc etc)
That´s my point of view!!
