http://www.travmonkey.com/2009/09/03/8-things-i-hate-about-hostel-dorms/
At some point during your travels you’re likely to have to stay at least once in a hostel dorm, especially if you are traveling on a budget. Dorms are great for meeting lots of new people but also have a tendency to give you the odd sleepless night.
Here are the top 8 things that annoy me about hostel dormitories...

I remember all of those things.
One hostel posted a notice on the board 'contribute to a good nights sleep' and had a short article about couples sharing one bed. The idea was to contribute a quarter or any loose change to provide the funds for them to upgrade to a private room.
I could add:
- noisy access to lockers that are in the dorm instead of being in the lobby or common room. The banging of a locker door is an especially startling way to wake up at any hour.
- opening or slamming of windows in a non-climate controlled environment. Lots of soft airflow and circulation are key to a restful environment.
- food or flatulence odors always contribute to a less than pleasant stay so it is important to have positive airflow in the dorm with more makeup air and good exhausting of the unpleasantness.
These items are what the smaller hostels concentrate there efforts in planning to produce the best ratings and reviews. Many are advertising hypoallergenic conditions and HEPA air quality.

No one has mentioned the light switch?? Usually the Spanish or Italians (I have no idea why those two nations in particular) coming in at 3am and whacking on all the lights! REALLY REALLY annoys me! As for the guy who replied to my glare with "is early maaan!" before crashing into bed, lights still blazing, let's just say one day we'll run into each other someday on a remote mountaintop.....

When I stay at hostels I always bring a pair of earplugs and a eye mask that the airlines give you. If I wanted a quiet, sterile environment, I would go to the Hilton. If something needs cleaning, I usually take the time to clean up whenever I can such as vacuuming the dorm room, taking out the trash, Cleaning the bathrooms, and doing the dishes in the kitchen. Hostelers need to realise that everything isn't perfect when staying at a hostel, however, you can have a lot of fun if you don't find stuff to complain about which you have no control over. When I stay at a hostel, I try to think how I can contribute and meet and talk to people from all over the world of all ages. You can't do that in a stuffy and overly clean five star hotel.

Well said! Having worked in a hostel for 4 years as much as i love the job, the ridiculousness of people never ceases to amaze me.
It angers me so much when a guests lack of preparation for the hostel environment or the basic lack of common sense or manners ends up being the hostel' fault. Then the person goes and voices their grievances through an on-line review! An instant 43% for your efforts!! :) - "dorm was noisy", EARPLUGS??, "people put the lights on when they came in", EYE MASK??, "10 bed dorm bathroom was busy in the morning", BOOK A SMALLER DORM MAYBE??, "bathroom floor was wet", USE THE PROVIDED MOP OR FLOOR TOWEL TO GIVE THE FLOOR A WIPE??
I've been tempted to reply accordingly ridiculous to such reviews ;) But it's not always good for business to speak your mind :)
All the best!

I know that some hostels make money selling drinks, but that's not a reason to not let people bring alcohol from outside!
