Tripadvisor has released this year’s list of the top ten DIRTIEST hotels. I don’t know how many years they have been sending out this list, but Josh posted about it in DIRTIEST hotels. My favorite review came from the European list: “Free mice with every room!” Way to be positive! I also like the way they say “94% of reviewers do not recommend this hotel” instead of “6% of reviews recommend it.”
I would hate to be the owner of a property on that list. Even more than that, I would hate to be the owner of a property that deserves to be on that list.

We have a few dirty hostels around us that people get tricked into booking because they are so cheap. After one night there most backpackers run to us for safety and some of the stories I've heard about how dirty it is amazes me. I just don't see the point in owning or managing a hostel when you obviously don't care about. Why bother if you're just going to let it go to shit?

Hah, I have definitely stayed at Jack London Inn in 2008. It was a pretty awful hotel. But honestly, it was cheap. I was in high school and all I wanted was a place to sleep.
If you truly cared about your establishment, you'd take care of it. If you don't, then suffer the consequences.

This place blows my mind. The place actually has signs that advertise free bed bug anti-itch cream, signs that say "Bed bugs are good for you" etc. They have a "sex room" with "Sex Room" spraypainted crudely on the door...They have a "torture room for drunks" as they describe it. The owner and staff openly use drugs and allow smoking indoors (against law in Vancouver)... I just don't understand how they are still allowed to operate. The price is probably one of those lowest in the developed world ($10/night) but surely not worth it. We don't even allow travelers to stay with us if we find out they are coming from American Backpackers because of the risk of bed bugs infiltrating our hostel.
What's more, you can find all kinds of glowing reviews about them on trip advisor etc. Why? They advertise a free night in exchange for a positive review! Now that's unethical.
If you're coming to Vancouver, don't make the mistake of going there!

European list clearly state the quality of governmental control in London and Amsterdam, and whole Turkey as well. Probably London will do something before Olympic Games 2012.

It looks like people get angry when their hotel makes the Dirtiest list. The 2011 #1 Dirtiest Hotel, Grand Resort Hotel & Convention Center sued Tripadvisor for trashing their good name.
They lost the lawsuit.

“Best of” and “worst of” rankings are perennially popular fodder for publications. They are great for grabbing headlines, stirring up controversy and baiting hyperlinks. Their sensationalism means rankings–especially “worst of” rankings–also can be litigation-bait. Fortunately, a recent court ruling found that publishing a “best of”/”worst of” ranking didn’t create defamation liability.
Tripadvisor didn’t write the reviews. They just pointed out that from all the hotels listed on their site this one had the lowest cleanliness score of all. After this ruling you can be sure that Tripadvisor will publish their Dirtiest Hotels list again next year.
