I have been on couchsurfing and hospitalityclub for about 3 years now. I have hosted like 20 people and I have been a guest when in India both in Mumbai and Dharamsala.
I like couchsurfing best because of all the tools it provide (showing nearby travelers, showing how are your friends, the couch request)
and above that all
There are the couchsurfing meetups. Every major city has one. Just find out where it is and go there socialize with fellow travelers and like minded people. Some folks take their guests to the meeting so it's always a chance to meet people from everywhere. Some exchange students also join the party. and it's usually in a bar, so what's best, you drink some beers with those weird folks bitten by the travel bug :D :D
and you get to know the "real" locals, get to know their culture better, get to know the local restaurants (where tourists never go because it's not on the guidebooks). And you make tons of friends everywhere :)
I still have plans to go on an around the world trip using couchsurfing as much as possible.
