Something a little different today: What are the movies/tv shows/books/songs/legends/blogs/art/photographs that either started you traveling or inspire you to keep traveling?

Let's see if we can create a list of these influencers from all over the backpacking world we share. Some of these could be obvious and some sublime.

When you think about it what doesn't in some way make us yearn for the road and new undiscovered lands, peoples and experiences?

Definitely the biggest one was this one: http://www.travelblog.org/Bloggers/2Brothers3Continents/ - these guys traveled the world for like 3 years through countless countries and almost always going by land, not using airplanes. Their stories are very inspiring, I guess the simple fact they set out to do it is very inspiring.

The next big inspiration came from the hospitalityclub.com and couchsurfing.org guests and hosts. First I heard about HC, but when I received my first guests I also heard about CS. I have hosted about 20 people so far and met dozens at the CS meetings. Meeting all these people from around the world only strengthens the will to quit being 9-5er and go away....

www.onebag.com - I used to backpack using my 60L backpack. However one day I spotted this website and I was reading the entire content of the website at once. I was sooo into his ideas that I decided to travel to India + Germany for 32 days using just a 25L backpack, a city backpack :)

Here it is: Traveling Light .

That way I transformed the way I used to travel. For starters I was using only hand luggage, waaay better when you are Brazilian entering customs in Germany, hehehee. You simply pass ahead of 300 people as they head to fetch their luggages.

Here is a friend of mine's music video that gives his travel philosophy. He is a great guy from Denmark. www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1UfPFKHp8k. I met him in New Zealand when he walked into a hostel I was working at. I hired him to be a one man guest welcoming committee. His job was to make up and sing a song at my request for everyone that checked in. Perfect guy, awesome idea. That was all he had to do. He traveled with only a pillow case and a guitar.

What if your fears and dreams existed in the same place?
What if to get to Heaven you have to brave Hell?
What if everything you ever wanted cost you everything you ever achieved?

... would you still go there?

I read this on a poster over 10 years ago and it made a huge impact on me. I have been trying to live by it ever since.

  • 1st time I saw a photo of Machu Pichu in the morning mist and every time since
  • Illusions: the Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah (Book)
  • Jitterbug Perfume (book)
  • Canadian Railroad Trilogy (song)
  • One Week (movie)
  • Ramblin Man (song)
  • Goin up the Country (song)
  • When I paint my Masterpiece (song)
  • Long May you Run (song)
  • Roam (song)
  • King of the Road (song)
  • Southern Cross (song)
  • City of New Orleans (song)
    • Outsourced (movie)
    • A Map for Saturday (movie)
    • Easy Rider (movie)
    • The story of Miyamoto Musashi (Japanese hero, legend, painter, author, painter, poet and swordsman)

Well that song list could have went on for a long, long time. Lots of photos, videos, countless travel shows and but most importantly for me...of course, the amazing, wonderful travel stories of the fantastic, intrepid backpackers who walk through our doors on a daily basis. Seven years of these stories so far and they never get old.

If you have the chance try to watch "The Darjeeling Limited" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0838221/). Very good actors, funny story, good chats while they cross India on board a train.

One of the influential books for me was http://www.hostelmanagement.com/forums/vagabonding-europe-north-africa-by-ed-buryn.html.

He didn't have great things to say about hostels in the 1973 edition though...

Great book. Awesome philosophy thanks for sharing. Youtube has some vids of this guy chatting about lots of travel/philosophy/life stuff. Worth listening too. He is a walking, talking travel motivational poster!
