Let's hope then there is some more transparency in the way they operate. I am sorry but I don't like their business model and there is no way I would consider buying stock in the company.
Expedia reveals plan to spin off TripAdvisor into new public company
The spin-off, announced in a statement at the end of trading on Wall Street in the US today, will see TripAdvisor become a public company by the third quarter of 2011.
The decision was given preliminary clearance by the board of directors of Expedia Inc and is subject to final approval by the board at a later date.
The two new businesses will feature the following:
• TripAdvisor including the main user review site as well as the 18 other companies included in the wider TripAdvisor Media Network such as AirfareWatchdog, CruiseCritic and FlipKey.
• Expedia, Egencia, Hotwire, Hotels.com and eLong and a number of other related leisure and business agency-led businesses.

I find sites like tripadvisor which rely totally on unpaid user generated content for their business model. I guess their argument would be that being the biggest of their type they are the unlikely to experience any downturn, but obviously if users turn to another site then they will be less profitable. There is certainly the issue of trust in their reviews, and also their liability for bogus or malicious reviews - I could see one day one of the big players taking them to court over this issue.
There is a difference to me between a site such as this, which has user generated content as part of a community to help, and something like tripadvisor, which uses user content as their main revenue stream.

Sorry, I am not sure if are supporting them or not? Before I became an accommodation owner, I didn't really have a problem with them, but now I have had a chance to see how they operate, I can agree at all with how they do business. If you have access to the business owners section, you see nothing but complaints. Their business listings are way overpriced for getting nothing more than a no-follow link.

Sorry for my poor english - meant to say that I find their business model interesting. I don't really support them or not. I just wonder whether their user generated model will be worth the millions (billions??) that they'll float the company for. It seems to me they are only one big lawsuit away from having to change their system radically.
Their paid listing service is a joke - it's far too expensive for what you get.
