In hot countries, the cost of Aircon is a major expense which can be reduced by ensuring the Aircon is only used in busy rooms, providing ventilation fans for use the rest of the time, or even charging more for an aircon room.
Hi everyone!
I'm working on a BPlan for a medium hostel (150 beds) and we estimate aprox 4-5% of our revenue to be eaten by utility costs.
I would like to get ideas on:
1) what's your variable utility cost per guest per day
2) whats your fixed utility cost regardless if you have no guests or full-house
3) strategies to reduce these costs - what works and what's not a good idea..... (ex: LED lights for corridors, economic showers; if you have elevators.... turning off 1 of them during low season; , etc?....)
I hope to get your input. If the results are relevant i'll post them on wiki section.
Thanks a lot!

This very true many people are not used to this type of humid heat and seem to find it hard to turn off A/C, even when going out for the day.
Make sure you go with Current power saving Air Con's (#5's they are here) They reduced my electric cost to half of what it did before I replaced the old ones.

I don't know all your Numbers, At first glance you may be a bit low on your estimate. Maybe others can estimate their current utility cost as a percentage.?. I'd guess mine about 8-9% as an average.
Every guest use's it to charge 1,2 or 3 items. Often leaving the charger in the wall. If you are unaware the chargers even when NOT charging an item still pulls electric.
When I go thru the rooms to inspect the maids work, seems I always pull a few chargers from the wall that are not connected to anything or check what it is connected to see if it's fully charged if so pull it..

I am a LEED AP and now in sustainability advisory for a major commercial real estate practice in the UK, I would typically preach for a commercial building including a hostel to have centralised ac and heat, though of course in many hostels this would take a major retrofit if there are in window units.
What are people's experience here with central hvac vs. individual units?
I am developing a hostel in East London.
