If anyone is interested, I've attached a map of where HostelManagement.com visitors are coming from in the past 30 days. Darker colors mean more visitors.

(The beige areas mean few or no visitors yet.)

Wow, that looks good! It seems you will be the no.1 news and discussions portal for hostels (if not already) ! Keep up the good job! :)

Thanks... I don't think there are many others (or are there?)...

Would you state that there are only insignificant number hostels in these countries? Which ones you miss from your world conquest? Is there any legend available for which colors mean how many visitors?

Some of the missing countries:

  • Nicaragua
  • El Salvador
  • Honduras
  • Belarus
  • Cuba (do they have open Internet?)
  • Myanmar/Burma
  • Syria
  • Iraq
  • the 'Stans
  • much of Africa (though people from backpacker spots like S. Africa, Kenya, Egypt, and Morocco are visiting)
  • Greenland

The yellow color means no visitors from that country in the past 30 days. The darker blues mean more visitors.

I'll send an email to the Greenland hostels and invite them to join the forums...

NEW: there have been recent visitors from Greenland, Burma/Myanmar, Kazakhstan, and more countries in Africa now. Paraguay, Central America, Cuba, Belarus, and some of the Middle East countries are new also.

Still waiting on a few more countries: Guyana, French Guiana, 4 of the 'Stans, Bhutan, and some South Pacific Islands like Vanuatu (though there have been visits from some like Tonga and New Caledonia).

Serbia and Montenegro aren't showing visits, but I think they must be sending an unknown IP because I think there have been visits from those places.

On the attached map, yellow means no visitors and the darker shades of blue mean more visitors.

I think there is just one in Greenland. Iceland? Could be a destination next summer. Their currency is in free fall right now - their entire economy is bogged down by the American credit crisis, which makes travelling there pretty cheap. Exactly that kick-started backpacking in Argentina!

Paraguay? I´d be surprised if there were many hostels. I have been there. It has not much to offer.

Probably not too many. I think you push up your country to number 17 pretty much all alone. Austria is number 14. That must be only me because there are hardly any hostels here.

Number 7 (Ireland) is Dan and the entire Hostelworld staff!

In general, I prefer not to be too specific about traffic numbers online, but ask me next time I'm in Europe or send me a PM. :)

I'm guessing that you are the most frequent visitor from Austria, but there are a fair number of hostels in Austria. Who knows :)

As far as I am aware I am the only active member of this forum from Greece. Let’s say that my 2 visits a day 7 days a week plus the odd lurker gives Greece 16th place.

If we look at the number of hostels listed in the HM hostel directory against the top 20 countries we get the following:

1• The United States - 40
2• The United Kingdom - 12
3• Canada - 5
4• Germany - 11
5• Australia - 4
6• India - 1
7• Ireland - 3
8• Italy - 11
9• Spain - 17
10• Portugal - 4
11• The Netherlands - 0
12• France - 0
13• Brazil - 19
14• Austria - 3
15• Argentina - 16
16• Greece - 3
17• Hungary - 1
18• Poland - 7
19• Russian Federation - 4
20• Belgium – 1

What conclusions can be drawn? Is it possible to arrive at a lurker index? If so then The Netherlands and France would appear to be top with India close behind.

There are also ~2500 people on the mailing list. Many hostels aren't interested in a free, no-strings-attached listing :)

EDIT: I missed the reasoning of the numbers, but see now...
India is sending traffic because "hostel" has another meaning there. There is also a huge forum spam industry in India (I have to ban users from Indian IP addresses regularly).
I wonder where the French traffic is coming from.
