want to open a hostel in US but where?
Hello all,
As a Turkish guy who lived in the states for 9 years, I want to open a hostel. The place I spent most of my US yeras is Baltimore. In Baltimore City with extreme property taxes It look better to rent a large building. I am not considering Baltimore as the only possible location. Obviously Baltimore is where I know extensively and there is only one hostel there which is in my opinion at a terrible location and still gets business.
My question to you is where else would you open a hostel in US? I will get into more details but lets see If we can start a discussion here first.
I am currently in Istanbul but will be back in Baltimore in a week. I used to do real estate there so thats going to help of course. But I need experienced hostel managers/owners as far as where else I could invest in. Open to ideas as well as partnerships.
I do have enough money to rent a building and open a 100 bed hostel all by myself but why not be partners and make the capacity bigger...I am into this idea as a lifestyle.
Lets here from you America :)Sandiego would be my dream location but I assume finding a large building will be somewhat difficult there...

Looks like there is plenty of cheap resorts and motels there though...Around 40 euros single or double for accomodation! I am not sure I can see 18 euro bunks at Orlando...

Hi fellow hosteller,
I don't know if you found a place yet, but it is best if you can set up a place, wherein travelers want to travel. SO a mid to larger city that attracts a fair amount of tourists is best. Or a mid-city where people want to stop, on their way to a tourist destination. Obviously, people in the states mostly drive everywhere or fly, so a lot of people will need a place to rest their head on the way to their destination.
I hope that helps a little at least.

NYC has just announced it will be legalizing for-profit hostels. About 2 years ago the city went around shutting down most of the hostels in the city, so now only about 20 remain (if that). The downside is that your startup costs would be more expensive here than in other cities, but I think it is a great opportunity.

wow thank you for the heads up :) The last thing I remember about NYC hostel seen was they were shutting down the hostels left and right. It would not be cheap though. Then again, you get to charge peole at NYC rates...Def something to think about...
