What type of hostel would you develop here??

Hi, I'm planning on opening a hostel in Montevideo, Uruguay, South America! The city has around 1.5 million inhabitants and is very close to Buenos Aires, a massive backpacker destination. The city already counts with more or less 8 hostels, but many of them are crapp!! Also, Montevideo is close (as the distances inside the country are short) to many points of interests, such as Colonia, Punta del Este and more.
My question is, what kind of hostel would you develop in this kind of city?? What size? how many dorms? do you recommend a bar?
It's not a great city as Rome can be, but it isn't a little town. I would like to hear the opinion of experienced hostel managers or employees, or whoever wants to make a comment. This will help me start focusing better on many aspects of the project.

Ok Fountainrunner, i'll let you know when I open the hostel, and don't worry, it's gonna be the best!
Kapake, I'll really appreciate if you could help me find some information abiut the backpacker traffic in BA, as well as the occupation average in different times of the year. I know I have to take advantage of being so close to BA, I've been talking to myh partner and we already have some ideas, we can make a deal with buquebus in which they would offer the ferry and the hostel as a package, and things like that, we have some contacts at buquebus!
Any info you can give me would be really helpful...we are starting the business plan and the part of gathering info and the market research with numbers is the hardest one.

I would deffinetely contact La Cacciola. It´s more related to backpackers than to regular tourists because of the price and area where it is located.
Tigre is a major interest to backpackers.
Then, I have to let you know that my experience in hostelling is very limited. I´m talking over some months of being here in Kapake 24/7. So I have no information on year to year figures.
Are you getting this place built?
Are you opened?
It´ll help A LOT the reading of this site, browsing services at hostels that have good ratings in BA and other nice cities in Argentina like Iguazú, El Calafate, Cordoba, Rosario plus the ones located in southern Brazil.

I´m planning a trip to MVD in 2 months I´d like to visit the site!
Building Kapake was a nice hassle.

We're not open, yet, and we're planning on renting a building with good space and location for the hostel. Our most difficult obstacle for now is the start up money.
Anyway, we could meet when you come to MVD, and you could give me and my partner some advice. Where are you going to stay here?

I'm sure a local knows the hot spots but overall Montevideo is unimpressive. Still, there is a lack of cheap hostels. I'm really not sure why anyone would stay here except to rest. I'd love to here update on your progress. Good luck. Anyone have suggestion on what you research before starting a hostel.

Montevideo, unimpressive? :confused: Not every place is for everyone but I won't go as far as to label the place unimpressive.

I don't think Montevideo is unimpressive, that's more a subjective opinion. I've been in some of the "greatest" cities of USA and I didn't like them at all, but that doesn't mean they are unimpressive, I know many people love them. I love european cities, that's just the kind of cities I like, but is very personal. It all depends on where did you stay, who guided you to the spots, what were you looking or expecting, etc. As I told you, all cities are different and have their own attractions. Of course there are some cities that have a plus beacause of their culture, history, nature, etc...but I enjoy visiting every place in the world. If someone local helps you reach the best spots, those ones that most tourist never visit, I ensure you you'll get impressed. There's a lot of things or places you haven't visited when you came to Montevideo. But that's your opinion, and I respect it!
