Out of curiosity, I'm mostly interested in the number of Americans at non-US hostels.

This is interesting... I'm glad the numbers are so high.
If Americans are generally still ignorant about what a hostel is, but are still helping to fill hostels, what would happen if more Americans knew what hosteling is?
I think that if Americans knew what hosteling is, it would be beneficial for developing hostels in the USA. There would be financial incentive to create hostels is more remote locations, like smaller towns in Arizona and New Mexico.

Similar here. I just wondered how many hostels actually keep record of that. HW´s customer analysis is the quickest way to get a rough figure.
I guess Germans are under-represented in HW´s statistic. When they want to book, they look up our phone number and call. Latin Americans are under-represented, too - they don´t reserve. Mexicans prefer to show up around midnight in groups of 10. They´re always totally shocked when they hear we´re full. :D

I wonder if Americans have a tendency to book in advance more than other nationalities.
Does anyone keep track of nationality in their front desk software? I tried to get the front desk to do it at one hostel, but the transient front desk staff were too underpaid and lazy to enter the information consistently.

This refers to our guests' nationality from Hostelworld in 2007:
USA 21.62%
Australia 18.00%
England 11.20%
Canada 6.92%
France 5.60%
And the rest 37% is from all over the world...

we do keep track of each guests nationality - unfortunately i havent been behind the desk for a few days and havent tried creating a report based on nationality. im back on tomorrow so ill have a look at the total numbers rather than just HW.

I've started a related thread about the dropping dollar and how (or if) it affects non-US hostels.
Are those numbers consistent, or are you noticing fewer backpackers from the USA?

Sorry it has taken a while but I have been rather busy getting the hostel ready for opening in 2 days.
So, how accurate are the HW figures? In our case - not at all. Let's look at a few nationalities:
HW Actual
USA 28.7% 16.1%
Canada 23.8% 11.8%
Australia 15.8% 7.2%
UK 4.5% 11.6%
Germany 1.0% 19.8%
Only 17.6% of our visitors booked through HW or HB (10.8% and 6.8% respectively). Well over 60% of people had been to the hostel before and booked through other means, e-mail, our web site, even Facebook now.
