I'm wondering what's the average number of hours per week that's required for an exchange in accommodation. I've worked at a hostel in the U.S. and I worked around 20-24 hours a week. I've been communicating with a hostel in Costa Rica trying to get a work-exchange there and they require about 35 hours a week. However, I remember conversations I've had with people from Europe and Australia who have done work-exchanges and they only worked a couple hours a day. So I'm wondering, does it depend on the country? Does it depend on the hostel? What's the norm? I was really wanting to spend some time in Costa Rica, but 35 hours seems kind of excessive. Should I pursue this particular hostel, or continue to look for other opportunities? Any suggestions, advice, or past experiences, would be appreciated.

If the accommodation in Costa Rica is the sole use of an apartment then it may just be worth 35 hours of your time.
I offer a bunk in a dorm room for 2 hours work a day which I and the staff think is fair. After all, it is not costing me anything unless the hostel is 100% full every night.

Try to investigate how much accommodation would cost, independently, and how much would be the wage for paid staff in each city.
Here in Europe, it is the case that housing is expensive, even hostel accommodations are expensive, so a 5-hour, 5 days/week daily shift seems fine.
As a live-in, I've worked anything from 4 hours every other day to 30 hours/week. I think more than 20h/week is like you won't get much time for other activities, and I honestly don't see the point of travelling in exchange for accommodation if you are going to be working for it all the time.

we say 2 hours for a bunk bed or 4 hour for private room for a couple plus extra for time worked for beer and spending money :steve: , but we are in a rural low cost hostel and we expect work exchange to be willing to work more hours if needed for money if needed
