Yahoo has a new Twitter competitor called "meme" (http://me.me/). It looks like it also borrows some features of Tumblr.com.
The domain name is great: "meme" is a word coined by Richard Dawkins meaning a unit of information transmitted by culture.

I missed the Facebook bandwagon, so I may as well get on meme at the ground floor.
I agree, Meme is a great brand; but it remains to be seen whether they will be able to compete with Twitter.

Many people have tried to clone Twitter and didn't make it. Jaiku was Google's failed attempt. Plurk is interesting, but I don't think it will catch on a way that hostels could use.
I think identi.ca is the most promising one so far. It's powered by Status.net which lets anyone run a Twitter clone. I think even different domains can talk to each other with status.net.
