In what the Washington Times is calling a decision “that could reshape the rules for online consumer reviews,” a Virginia court has ruled that Yelp must identify seven anonymous reviewers who left negative reviews for a carpet-cleaning business. In turn, the carpet-cleaning business will then be allowed to sue the Yelpers for defamation.
I think there is a delicate balance between the need to prevent fake bad reviews and the need for people to be able to speak online anonymously. I'd be curious to read the actual reviews to see whether they are legitimate bad reviews or actually say something that goes too far.
Edit:
According to this post, the company is called Hadeed Carpet Cleaning in Alexandria, Va.
This is a Yelp page for a business by that name in that city:

If I understand correctly, it looks like the company is trying to match Yelp usernames to their company database. They say that those names aren't in their company database, so therefore they say that Yelp has to identify the users.
