Your insights please! I need to purchase mattresses & covers...

General Hostel Operations

Hello community,

My husband and I are in the business planning and conceptual phase of our 'adventure-inspired' hostel. We are researching start up costs and I am hoping someone can help.

1) We are budgeting for mattresses right now (both Twin and Queen). Should we go with Twin XLs or Twins? How have you purchased your mattresses in bulk in the past? I am looking into local distributors as well as online, but seems the costs can really go up if I go locally.

2) Quality of the mattresses. What has been your experience with certain brands? Is there a top-notch quality, lasting and comfortable mattress out there? Of course we're looking for a mattress that is the best value for price...

3) Covers and linens. Of course we aim for utmost cleanliness (and comfort) and are wondering if you have any suggestions of dynamite brands in this realm?

4) I have found some online hospitality 1-stop-shop sites - any sites that are better than the rest? We are based in the U.S. (Oregon) so we're looking for U.S. based companies.

Hi Alissa,

I don’t have specific recommendations for top value brands in the US, but regarding the Twin vs. Twin XL question, I would go longer if you have the space for it. You may not have an abundance of very tall guests, but when you do they will appreciate them. “Normal sized” guests won’t have any problem with extra leg room either, even if they don’t need it.

Two Twin XL mattresses will also fit properly side by side into a King sized bed frame (in case you ever need a replacement King mattress in a pinch for a private room).

Hey Rucksack Brian,

Thanks so much for the thoughts - they're really helpful. After posting this and doing some in-depth research, looks like we're going to go with a local mattress retailer. The mattresses are locally made, can be recycled, and they are chemical free. After some good discussion and understanding our vision, the owner quoted us at a great price and we decided to move forward.

That’s great! What kind of mattress material did you decide would be the best for your hostel? (Foam, springs, pillow top, etc) We use Euro Comfort spring mattresses, and they have always been good for us. I have a Memory Foam mattress at home though. It is quite comfortable, not to mention much less expensive. I haven’t decided which type I’ll choose when it comes time to replace the hostel’s mattresses again.

Kudos on the bold effort Alissa, and a good decision. I do not know much about mattresses, but would like to tell you about some of troubles a friend of mine faced about mattress and carpet management. It seems very few know of the health hazards that can be caused by dust and mold. Also chemdry central sydney tells about the adverse effects of dirty carpets. Hope this information is useful. From my experience, good quality mattresses are well worth the money and will last years - We use 4* hotel quality spring mattresses and they are definitely worth it!
