World66 is a good one.

Wikitravel.org is run by the same people.

TripAdvisor.com has always struck me as having too many ads so I don't use it much. I wrote an article that includes information about Tripadvisor because that is one of the sites that Google gets their hostel reviews from.

I recently took over as webmaster of a travel site called CommunityTraveler.com, where people can get a free travel blog--but CommunityTraveler is still in the early "beta" stages of development... I'm hoping to add more hostel information to it later...

What about Expedia?
I know they've done a deal with Ryanair recently.

(For those who don't know Ryanair are the mack daddy of "low fairs" airlines. (I just signed in to edit this but I think I'll leave it as "low fairs" rather than "low fares" - I think it suits them better) They're cheap but not cheerful and even by Irish standards they're service is abysmal but they're sure doing much better than our other airline and they've done more, I reckon, to bring Europe together than the Treaty of Rome ever could not to mention spawning a whole number of bandwagon airlines like Centralwings, HLX, et all)

The way Ryanair do it is they sell you a ticket (they also try selling you "travel insurance") then after the transaction is complete they try for a cross sell, "would you like cheap accomodation in ?"
The new deal, apparently, runs in conjunction with Expedia so I guess if you're on the roster with Expedia then you could do quite well from people looking for someplace to stay. Generally speaking Ryanair airports seem to be as far away from the proposed destination (Treviso is not Venice people) so if you were near the airport, or had a pickup service, you could do well for yourself. Don't forget the reason these people are on Ryanair in the first place is because they want to travel on the cheap so they'd be more inclined to stay in a hostel, rather than a smarmy hotel, anyway.

Now from what I've been reading Ryanair seem to be expanding their operations even further now with lots of new proposed destinations so *in theory* at least, if you have a hostel in a Ryanair destination, or proposed destination, getting on Expedia and getting referrals through Ryanair could fill up a lotta lotta beds.

Course this is just my impression of it. I'd be interested to hear what ppl think about Expedia and all this in general.

i hate both expedia and ryanair (mainly because theyve brough a new meaning to 'cattle class' and fly into the crappiest airports in existance). in my experience, they aim at different markets to 'backpackers'. certainly the new 'hostel/hotel' fits in a little better (a nonsense concept if ever ive heard one).

expedia is usually aimed at private room users, rather than dorms. people who stay in dorms are far more likely to book directly or through a dedicated engine such as hostelworld. incidently, WRI (hostelworld, boo, hostels) has a partnership with ryanair aswell.
