The US state of Utah now allows students to carry guns to school:

In Thomas McCrory's morning routine, he gets his books, and gets his gun. He's ready for school.

McCrory's a junior at the University of Utah.

In 2006, Utah's Supreme Court explicitly allowed guns on college campuses for anyone with a concealed weapons permit, CBS News correspondent Mark Strassmann reports.

It's the only state where that's allowed.

You carry it on your hip?

"Yeah, I carry it on my side, underneath the jacket," McCrory said.

McCrory, a ski-patroler, was paralyzed in a 60-foot fall. He felt vulnerable.

Then came the massacres at Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois University.

He started carrying a gun.

"It's a comfort to me knowing that I would have a fighting chance if something like that would happen," he said.

Now lawmakers in nine other states are debating whether guns belong on college campuses.

Now students in other states want to arm themselves ... with the right to return fire.

Now that what makes me freaked out.
In Europe you can only carry a gun if you have special permission...

Instead of disarming everyone, let's sell firearms to every single person!
I guess the next step would be to sell guns to infants!

Some people say it is a constitutional right, c'mon, that bill was made in 1776... And there are no more indians or bandits to shoot.

Of course that is not the interest of the firearm lobby...
Let's shoot each other! Then we can sell more bullets to you!

That kind of decision could only pass in certain states. Conservative states are generally pro-gun.

You don't need any kind of permit to buy a gun in Arizona.

When I lived in Arizona I had a couple of roommates that had guns. One kept two loaded pistols in his desk. He was mentally unstable so we were a little worried, but it was before the school shootings...

I went to Walmart with him when he bought a .22 rifle and some ammo and there was no background check, waiting period, or permit required.

Eventually he decided to move to Alaska so he bought a larger "Dirty Harry" pistol "for protection" and just drove off to Alaska. I guess his other two handguns and rifle weren't enough. Never heard from him again.

Another roommate in Arizona came back from work one night with a pistol that he bought from a coworker for $50. We asked him why he bought it and he said, because it was only $50, why not? :confused:

Patsy Long, 34, of Deepwater, died after being shot in the chest with a .22-caliber handgun on Saturday. Her husband, Ronald Long, fired the shot from the inside of their home after several unsuccessful efforts to punch a hole through the exterior wall using other means.

Henry County sheriff's deputies said the woman was hit by the second of two shots fired by her husband.

Many people in the US are scraching their heads also. It's generally only the right-wing that is against any gun control.

(The US is still a safer place than countries like Brazil, Thailand, Russia, Jamaica, Belize, Mexico, Argentina, Latvia, Costa Rica, and Estonia...)

True. But permission to bring guns to school isn´t nearly as awkward as the compulsary black bag over women´s heads in Saudi and other Arab countries.

Or that Kim Il Sung is still officially president of North Korea although he died in 1994, which makes this country a necrocracy. :D

very true - but im not really sure anyone posits saudi arabia or north korea as the bastion of all things good and free in the world.

theres still a sizable part of the world that believes in the great american dream. millions immigrate each year - most illegally of course - from central america, asia and eastern europe.

most first world countries dont buy the rhetoric, but we still only make up a small proportion of the worlds population. things have certainly unravelled in the past 8 years, but for all its problems, i still consider the US one of the good guys. i remember hearing the states described as a big puppy in a tiny little room. its a puppy and means no harm, but everytime it gets excited and wags its tail, something gets broken.

I used to think that, too.

I don´t know for sure about the entire world - outside Europe, I have only travelled Latin America for a year. Although most of them wouldn´t turn down a US green card, they have a very sober opinion about the US.

Just take Chile´s example - they remember the September 11 - of 1973. That was the day when their elected and re-elected president got blown away by Pinochet´s junta with a little help of the CIA. Why? He dared to nationalize the copper mines, which were American-owned.

The same sort of stuff happened in dozens of countries all over the world. Collateral damage: millions dead. This is not about breaking things when they wag their tail because they´re excited. If you ask me, there is another pattern: The profits of [insert names like Halliburton, United Fruit, ...] are always more important than democracy or human rights elsewhere in the world.
