My first big trip was an attempt to travel around the world with $2500 (lasted 10 months, but was overly ambitious :D).

Wow... when was that? It's 8 dollars a day!!! :eek:
How much would you need for the same trip now?

I've talked to an Aussie few days before, he did Iceland for two weeks with 500EUR...

It was 1999 and I was working for room/board along the way. Actually started without any money, but I usually calculate the trip from the day I quit my initial job (where I was sleeping in a tent in the parking lot of a tomato paste factory) and ended up in my first hostel :D

Long story...I was driving 18-wheelers, crewing on a sailboat, cleaning public toilets, volunteering on an organic farm... It would have been impossible without hostels.

It got to be too harsh of a lifestyle after about 10 months so I turned around and started another trip in the other direction :D

If I had that budget now I would travel by bicycle.
(If I didn't have to keep working I would hop on a bike right now...)

Wow... That's quite adventurous! I bet you have a lot of stories to tell.

You have a laptop... which you could carry on your bike while you travel. Present day hostels usually have decent internet connection. ;)

Sometimes we have some guests in our hostel who've been pedaling around from the UK to Hungary and they usually going to all the way down to Turkey... it is about 3000 kms (2000 miles) overall. You could have another reason to visit Plakias again! ;)

I met a guy from Japan earlier this year who had biked his way from Asia to Europe, dropped down the east coast of Africa and back up the west coast, and was continuing on to see the rest of the world. He had been on the road for three years when I met him. It made me feel extremely lazy taking trains and budget flights to get around.

Incidentally, we met by sharing a dorm room, which was alive and bustling (to make some connection to the topic of this thread:D).

I already planned out the route last summer :D
(3,500 km from Barcelona to Stockholm.)

It can't be done at this point yet unless I can make a lot of extra savings in the next 5 months, but maybe summer 2010.

I'm going to be in Europe for 3 months next year, but not on a bike...

I once hosted a couple of Russians through HospitalityClub. They were traveling around Brazil spending like 6 USD per day.

They're using either hospitalityclub, couchsurfing or camping for lodging and hitchhiking all the way. the russian girl had around 150 recommendations on HC which I found impressive!!
