I often pick my destinations based on music too.
I've been thinking of going to San Francisco for a few months in early 2009 just for the music scene. My two favorite stores are there: Guitar Solo (a massive classical guitar shop with their own publishing company) and Lark in the Morning -- instruments from around the world:

I just got an email about Songlines music awards.

I regard myself as interested in world music, but essentially traditional and folk music. I looked at this reference with interest, but the info is clearly geared to an 'in crowd', because I had no idea where 'Charlton Park' is, I didn't even know which country, and it took me quite a lot of web pages to find out! And when I looked at the prices, where the booking fee alone is £8, such a festival is clearly for those with a very different range or level of interest than I have!

OK - so the Cambridge Folk Festival is more your 'cup of tea" or any of the multitude of folk festivals around the UK - just fine. I think that we agree that we would both stay away from the Reading Rock Festival!
However, WOMAD is a bit different, very family orientated, half the artists are only known to the pure officianados but where ever you go wonderful sounds hit you. Started by Peter Gabriel in the very early 70's with a wet weekend in Essex - he would have been declared bankcrupt had not Genisis reformed to bail him out. But he persisted and now, with probably more than 100 festivals worldwide to their credit, they sell out each one in very short time. I have managed to get to 12 of them, 5 in Cornwall, 5 in Reading, 1 in Athens and 1 in Las Palmas. Worth every penny!
OK - so I am a festival junkie - one of the things I miss most about no longer living in the UK.
