I had to look that up:

They just contacted you out of nowhere?
I'm in the UK and I've just received a demand from PRS looking for quite a lot of money so that we can legally play the radio in our office. They want even more if it's played in reception, the hostel public areas, as hold music on the phone.... Online I've seen that a seperate PPL license is also needed if we want to play any music and stay legal. Does anyone have any experience with this? Any advice?

Yes, out of the blue! Anyone else been contacted? What did you do? If we stick to the letter of the law it could cost us thousands. I'm seriously considering not playing music and switching to the birdsong digital radio station. I don't think the birds are on to licensing yet.

I don't know what their music is like, but there are new projects like Magnature that offer very cheap music licensing. I checked their price list and it's $60/year for one location.

In the UK the copyright on music, and therefore the neccesity to pay to play, expires at the end of the year of the 50th anniversary of the composers death. Therefore by my reckoning most classical music, a lot of jazz and even some early popular music are free to play.

Are there any local UK artists who would give the hostel a free CD in exchange for the opportunity to have their music played at the hostel? :)
