Training Staff for Hostel Evacuations & Emergencies

Does your hostel have an evacuation plan, or any kind of staff training for emergencies?

There have been fires in hostels before (e.g., Australia) so I think it's a good thing to consider and have a plan for. Does the staff know how to put out a grease fire on the stove, check fire detectors/extinguishers, or evacuate the building?

Here's a sign from a hostel in Argentina giving instructions:

encargado (manager?) -- sound alarm and call 911
maintenance(?) -- cut gas and power
reception -- use fire extinguisher
persona de limpieza(?) -- evacuate the building

(something like that)

fire regulations are a HUUUGE deal here, especially in an old building like ours. i have to give 30min of fire training to all staff every 6 months and have them sign off on the training, everything must be logged.

we've had some construction going on on the roof - not for us, its a friggin mobile phone tower! - and tehyve set off our fire alarm 3 times... and broken it once. not happy. had to evacuate about 100 people yesterday afternoon because the guys on the roof were drilling into metal and the heat/smoke that came up set off the alarm. that phone tower is the bane of my existence i swear...

As I understand a Hotel must have atleast two staff members per shift trained in emergency procedures, Hostels would be included in this category. This in not just a ethical matter for a Hostel but also a legal one. The two associations in the US that are closest related to this issue is "The American Society of Safety Engineers" and "The National Fire Protection Association. Some Fire departments in large cities also do building/hotel evacuation training. I think this is a good idea for any hostel, especially the large ones. Safety & Security first.
