General Hostel Operations

My husband wants to put a Pool table (a billiard) in common room. I am afraid that this game could create an over excitement which would involve money, drinking and bad behaviour. Does anybody have an experience with a Pool table in hostel? And what do you thing about a Piano in common room? Would it attract any interest?

We have two pool tables. One in the lobby, second in the restaurant. I should admit that it is a nice thingy, go for it. If you have the space of course. If by placing pool table in your common area will make your guests feel anyhow uncomfortable (due to the lack of space for example), then it is probably no. Otherwise I personally see no reasons not to have one.

As for "over excitement which would involve money, drinking and bad behaviour", well, why have hostel in this case? Eldery home maybe? :D

And what do you thing about a Piano in common room? Would it attract any interest?

The best times I've had in hostels were playing music. Many unlikely combinations happen with music:

I played Italian lute music on guitar in Greece with a guy from Arkansas who had played lute for the Queen of England.
Played Iraqi, Egyptian and Turkish folk songs in Crete with an Egyptian on tabla and an Israeli who was traveling with a Turkish cümbüş.
ran into a professional guitar duo who performed Django Reinhardt-style jazz at a hostel in Hawaii
I've also met many concert musicians in hostels -- they often aren't traveling with instruments...
too many examples to list...

IMHO, put as many musical instruments in the hostel as possible. There will occasionally be the person who plays Für Elise over and over all day, but the good times will be worth it :)

I agree fully with Hostels. However, most often there is just one person who picks up a guitar or sits at the piano and vaguely plays bits of a tune which nobody knows or can identify, which is pleasant enough but does not stimulate much. The best is if someone can play a lively folk or pop song that everybody knows and get a singalong started!

If your common room is big enough, put a pool table at one end so that it doesnt distract others. And DONT put a TV in, that will certainly depress the conversation and make it difficult for anyone to start playing or singing.

Definitely -- there will be some times when people will be annoying with the instruments, but it will be more than made up for by the good experiences.

Put a few songbooks out with popular songs -- guitar chords, piano score and lyrics. Beatles always works. People can print chords and lyrics on the computer. When new ones are printed, put them in a 3-ring-binder instead of throwing them out.

TV and musical instruments are a bad mix.

i love when hostels have a room just with pillows books and wifi conection no nois allowed

also i thinl a music room is cool a hostel must have atleast a guiter and a few other istruments
