I was going to write up a survey as well and do a mass distribution amongst my friends, their friends, etc. I was hoping to get some other ideas but it looks like the thread is pretty dead. I was thinking a draw after a few months for a gift card or something might get some additional answers. Just started a few minutes ago but please everyone add to this and I will put it online and list the results. Some ideas so far:

When on vacation how much do you normally spend for accommodation per night?

Have you ever stayed in a hostel or any dorm-style accommodation? (multiple bunk beds in each room)
If yes, how would you rate your experience/s?

When thinking of a hostel what factors are most important in your decision?
List from 1-5
-cleanliness
-price
-number of bunks in the room
-comfort of bunks
-location of hostel (near bus routes, walk/drive distance to restaurants, etc)
How do you usually book your accommodation?
-online (then list some major travel sites)
-travel agent
-on site/after arrival
Do you check reviews before choosing a place to stay?
If so, where?
-websites
-friends
-travel guides (lonely planet, etc.)
How important are third party reviews in your selection?
-give some options...
