Hosting Community Events at a Hostel

My wife an I are looking at a property to open a new hostel. It is in an old church building in a good location that has an existing stage/backstage area, which could be separated from the rest of the hostel in terms of non-guest access.

An idea I'm tossing around is to have use this as a sort of community events area; inviting local theater groups, musicians, comics, poets, etc, to use this area however they choose for a small fee or commission. My hope is that this would bring more guests in and give them a chance to interact with the local artist population, provide a venue for artistic expression and experimentation as well as provide some additional revenue. The rules would be that the person/group would book the space in advance, provide their own setup, promotions and cleanup, and abide by quiet hours and restricted access to the building.

I wanted to see if anyone had examples of this sort of thing being done, ideas on what issues could arise or suggestions on how to make it work.

So this would be a hostel and Community Hall?

I think the two activities could go well together, but they are two separate activities. Running the Hall would certainly help you gain favour with the local people, who would see what the hostel is like and how good it is, so would recommend it to their visitors as a good place to stay. Some hostellers would be interested in the performance on the night they were there, but many would not, so I suggest you don't expect a large amount of interaction.

I know a small hostel in South Wales that has an arrangement of this type, where the Village Hall is in the same building although it is run by a separate organisation, and I believe they have some interacting activities.
