Being the first place on a Google search
Hi,
Francisco from san Juan and new to the forum.
I am not sure how everything works and hope that I am posting this in the right place.
I do not know much about the internet and google and wonder how and what it takes for me to make sure that my hostel will appear first when people search google for Hostels in Puerto rico.
Thanks for any help you can give me with this.
Francisco.

Hi Josh,
Thanks for the quick reply.
Our main website for content is http://sjihostel.wordpress.com/ but we also own the domain www.hostelspuertorico.com which we redirect to that. From my understanding of it the Hostelspuertorico.com site is linked to Google Places.
Is this a good way for us to be doing it?
Thanks again for the reply.

I think WordPress.com has the option to use your own domain name. For $12 you could have your entire site at hostelspuertorico.com...
I recommend putting the text "Puerto Rico" in the . Google uses the to tell what the page in about.
The controls the text that appears here:
One way to do it would be to change that text from "San Juan International Hostel" to "San Juan International Hostel, Puerto Rico".

Here's a good article by a great SEO marketer, Neil Patel. He talks a lot about how to get higher rankings on Google.

Nice work, I searched for Hostels in San Juan in Puerto Rico, and guess what?? http://sjihostel.com/ appears on the first page which is good, right below HW and other booking engines. There's always room for improvement. Here's a quick list:
- Google ranks partly based on your site's content, so you want to be relevant. Make a list of keywords that you want to rank for. Check out http://www.google.com/trends/ to see what people are searching for. Your keyword list should be a list of words or phrases that backpackers search for on Google to get to your website or others. Once you come up with that list, it will also help guide your marketing efforts in PPC (Pay-per-click, like AdWords) campaigns.
- Use your keywords in your: URL (like Josh pointed out above), Page Title, Headings and in the first few sentences of your Paragraphs. This being said, it's important not to over do it because Google could blacklist you for keyword spamming. Here's a video straight from the horse's mouth (Matt Cutts at Google): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0z7XOOmoM4,
- Create a blog and keep it alive with new relevant content. This will help you tons with ranking well on Google. Every new post you publish creates a new indexed page and more (relevant) pages on your hostel’s site help your hostel's site rank higher! Plus people + Google love seeing fresh content.
