Confusion Over the Word "Hostel"

In some countries, the word "hostel" has more than one meaning.
When I see headlines like "Convicted killer 'stabbed friend to death' at London hostel" I wonder what kind of negative effect that has on public perception of "hostels".
Do you think that bad press for those kinds of "hostels" affects the image of travelers' hostels?
