Hi all,
Could you kindly share your experience in regards of selling extra bed in hostels. I have 6-bed dorm room and family room (private). sometimes our guest requested to have extra bed, both in the dormitory and family because they don't want to separate the traveling party.
Do you provide extra bed?? or is it too hotel-like...
your opinion is highly appreciated.

We base our pricing on per person rather than per room. So adding a bed is just a prorated additional cost to the customer. We usually make allowances for children however. (free generally) I think its a great idea from a business standpoint and a customer satisfaction standpoint. Logistics, safety and use of resources such as bathrooms must be considered too.

The customer would not mind paying for the "extra bed" should it be available. We had an experience when a group of 7 adults wanted to stay in our 6-Bed Dorm. They were very pushy to put all of them in one room as they want to have the privacy. But we have no extra bed available. They then decided not to stay in our hostel. A bit silly but it happened as the knowledge of hostel is not widely known. My Hostel is located in Indonesia, a nation where the hostel industry is relatively new. I have to be able to distinguished the difference between hostel and hotel to our customers.
I could accommodate having extra bed in the hostel but my biggest concern with providing extra bed is that it's not in line with the hostel concept. it's too hotel.. Is it common for hostels to provide extra bed?

It sounds like they’re not really looking for an extra bed as much as a 7-bed dorm. In that case, it fits right in line with the hostel concept.
I haven’t seen many hostels that have roll-away beds on hand, but I think it has more to do with space limitations than principle. We have moved beds around from other dorms and even thrown mattresses down on the floor to accommodate groups. As long as your guests are happy I wouldn’t worry too much about being too hotel-like.

In this case we provide extra mattresses and use our cheapest fare to charge it...

if you have extra beds and city code does not prevent the extra body AND they take the entire dorm, i don't see any reason not to provide the extra bed. I don't see anything 'hotel-like' about it at all...afterall in a hotel they won't let 7 people sleep in a room (if they know about it).
We used to keep extra mattresses for this purpose, but city codes now prevent us from doing so.
