I read in the info for Greg & Tom Party Hostel in Krakow.
I was wondering what kind of bracelets are these?

I think they're using Tyvek wristbands. They're pretty durable, and they can be customized and printed up from all kinds of places online.
People who bounce from festival to festival frequently wear huge numbers of these bracelets on their wrists like a badge of honor long after the events are over. It's an easy way to get some word-of-mouth advertising when your guests move on.

So are these bracelets then for security reasons or as a way to advertise? I have never gotten one from a hostel before.

I think that because they have a bar and maybe they allow and people from outside to come, so they can recognize their guest for the welcome drink or free beer etc... maybe :)

Generally the bracelets are used for security purposes, (to recognize your guests) but the promotional factor is a big added bonus. In addition to tracking who is supposed to be in the hostel and who is not, it also helps other local businesses (bars, restaurants, shops) to recognize your guests and appreciate how much business they get as a result of you being there. It also helps taxi drivers to get your guests home if they go out and get drunk and can't remember where they're staying. If your guests continue to wear them after they leave, then they advertise for you in every hostel and every city they visit too.
I haven't seen many hostels using them, but some do. They're very popular with big resorts who do all inclusive packages.
