You're doing a good job of selling the idea. :)
I would go there.
I like rjd1983's idea of a mix of dorms and privates and see what people are interested in booking.
Hi all,
Some years ago I went down to the Shire (North Island, New Zealand) and stayed in hostels there. Twas wonderful. Well, I grew up in the Shire of America, the Berkshires, to be exact, on a little hill called Jug End (feel free to confuse it with Bag End) located in southwestern Massachusetts in New England. The house I grew up in is currently, and reluctantly, on the market to be sold, but we got to thinking it would be much better to turn it into a hostel. It has 8 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms upstairs. Downstairs there is a living room and dining room both looking out at a beautiful view; a large kitchen with 6 burner range, two ovens and a large griddle for making pancakes for hungry boarders, and an office. It also has a marvelous radiant heat masonry fireplace to get cozy by on cold winter nights and a beautiful tile bathroom upstairs (for the master bedroom) with a very large tub. It is located less than a mile from the Appalachian trail and thus would be a nice refuge for through hikers. It is 3 miles from Catamount, a local ski resort, with 1000 foot vertical.
Honestly, it might do better as a Bed and Breakfast, but I think an 'upscale' hostel on the cheap could be very cool. :)
The house is located near a small town called Great Barrington that is a tourist trap during the summer and fall because of the culture and history of the area. There is lots of theater, art (including Norman Rockwell museum), music, restaurants, leaf peeping, etc. Most of the tourists are New Yorkers getting away to their second homes (it's 2 hours north of NYC), but all sorts of travellers come through. Many buses stop in Great Barrington and we could setup a shuttle service to get passer-throughs to the hostel and back to town.
Does this seem feasible? There are many Bed and Breakfasts in the area, and motels, but there are no hostels.
