My hostel is in China and getting tip is very unusual. We'll return the tip to our guests straight away. meanwhile, we'll suggest that we feel grateful for the tip but if you like our service, please don't forget to say something online.

A few questions about tipping housekeepers:
Do your guests tip the housekeepers?
If so, how does it happen? On a plate? In dorms or just in private rooms? How much are the tips? Do you do anything to encourage the guests to tip?
And: is tipping housekeepers a custom in your country in general?
I didn't see it much at the hostels I've worked at, but I'm curious about how it works at other hostels.

I'll bet the housekeepers don't really appreciate this policy very much, but it's sure to make an impression on the guests!
I used to work in an all inclusive resort where we were forbidden to accept tips. I would always tell guests that if they wanted to tip me they could buy me a drink in the bar. Now that I'm no longer an employee and I depend on my hostel and its reputation for my livelihood, I like your approach much better!

In my culture (Philippines) tipping is a way of appreciation. I also get tips myself but I tell my guests it will go to my housekeeper. For me, it's okay for my staff to get a tip and this speaks volume how right and how good their work is when they get something from guests — they're appreciated.
