RFID locks for lockers?
Hey guys,
I'm in the process of opening a hostel and have been reading a lot in this forum lately. So I feel well prepared :)
As most threads on RFID-locks are pretty old and things might have changed in the meantime I'm starting a new one.
My hostel will have 12 rooms and 80 beds. I want the doors to have RFID locks and I'm also considering to equip the lockers with RFID-locks. The costs for locker-locks would sum up to € 7.500 though... I would also have to have the lockers build in a different and most likely more expensive way. Do you think that's worth it?
With the cheapest (European) supplier electronic locks for doors and lockers, software and other necessary equipment would add up to € 12.000 + tax + Installation. I'm almost certain I can't afford it but a friend of mine gave me the advise to take a look at the chinese Version of ebay - www.alibaba.com.
They actually offer these locks for one third to one fourth of the price I would get here but I'm not too enthusiatic about chinese engineering...
Another friend who is concerned with imports from China told me to look for a Standard which is widely used and therefore likely to be copied from chinese companies. I could buy copied parts and the original Software then.
Well, this thread is probably pretty confusing but I would appreciate any advice!

I'm in china and so close to many sources of these locks but in my hostel I decided to use mechanical ones rather than the electronic.
The sample electronic lockers we got cost around only €3.5 to €7 per one, and a guest will have a wrist key to open it. Software included. However these locks look like a plastic toy which doesn't give me any sense of security. There is a better model which costs €20. Daily maintainance is also a headache. Like a door lock, you almost never know its quality before using it.
At the end I chose a padlock for lockers in a dorm. It's only €1 per each which is heavy, strong, and looks like an expensive Mul-T-lock model. In your hostel it would mean €100 for the lock system, comparing to €7500. Sometimes guests forget to return the lock for us. So be it. It's just an operational cost.
We also use another lock system for our self service luggage room. For easier management, a padlock is not used. We use a mechanical card lock system. The card-like metal key can't be copied. These locks are called "sauna lock" (桑拿鎖) and costs only €3 per each. If the lock is broken, we will just replace it instead of fixing it.

In my opinion, the risk of going with the chinese locks is the warranty. How will you complain? And maintenance? I'm going RFID for 44 lockers and 8 rooms - is much easier to keep track of a card and security issues - an important subject for me.

Hi,
I would contact Ingersoll-Rand/CISA and KABA. I don't have currently those lockers, just dorm locks (from CISA), but thinking of installing those lockers...
