Ensuite Bath room in the 10 bunk-beds dorm? Feasible?
Dear all,
I plan to open a new hostel. According to the floor plan, I have some dorm rooms being able to arrange 10 bunk-beds (5 block of bunk-beds). I want to design ensuite bath room for those dorm rooms (each bath room has one private toilette and one private shower with their own doors. Is means that the bath room can have 3 or 4 people occupying at a same time. For example, one person uses shower, one person uses toilette while these other two persons using washing sinks).
Does any one have idea about that? Is it feasible with one bathroom sharing for 10 guests?
With best regards,
Tony

Dear zomac, Thanks for your response. Could I understand that you suggest to build shared-bathroom for dorm rooms?.
I did some research in this forum, almost people suggest to have ensuite-bath room to enhance the quality of the hostel. Now, I am considering between two options ensuite or shared bathroom for dorm rooms.
In case of shared bath room, does any body suggest me on the size of shared bath room serving for 40 beds.
With best regards,
Tony

Hey Tony,
I've worked in a couple of places which have had ensuite showers and we only had a couple of complaints about the noise. The key here is to make sure that you also have some bathrooms and showers that are not in the room. Also, for 10 people one shower does not seem like enough. Think about the queue for the shower in the morning just before check-out. Again, this is where a back-up communal bathroom would come in handy.
The last hostel I worked at had 50 beds made up of 12 dorm rooms and 2 privates. 5 of the dorms had ensuites and the max number to an ensuite was 6. We had 4 showers and 5 toilets in communal areas. All in all it worked really well!
Hopefully that helps!

In a 10 bed dorm, you're best only having toilets and sinks. People will be wanting to have a shower at 1 or 2 or 5 in the morning. Every one is sleeping, they decide at 3am they need/want a shower, light goes on, fan goes on, water goes on, lights off, lights on, water on, water off. Too much noise for a 10 bed dorm.
People would be happy with just a toilet and a sink. People need the toilet more often, then the shower...

Hi Tony,
I've stayed at 10-bed dorm long time ago. There was always a long queue in the morning and some people could use it up to an hour. At the end, many others had to use the public bathroom.
In my experience, major complaints about ensuite bathroom is the noise from an hairdryer. I don't put them into my ensuite dorm bathrooms, not even a power outlet is made available in those dorm bathrooms. After a mild complaint on Hostelworld about having no hairdryer in dorm bathroom, we've made a notice about our policy dedicated to maintain fair sleeping quality, then everything has been fine.

Thanks Katrina , rjd, and zomac
Your feedbacks are so valuable. Finally, i think that the communal bathrooms are more advanced than ensuited. I decide to change the floor arrangement, having two communal bath rooms for male and female.
So, how is your recommendation ideally for communal bath rooms serving for 30 guests totally? Interms of how many sinks, toilets, and showers requiring for female/ male bathrooms.
With best regards,
Tony.

Where I used to work, we had about 60-70 beds. Showers and toilets, we had about 4x dedicated showers, 3x dedicated toilets, and 1x bathroom. That was enough for 60-70 people, but the biggest problem we had was the location of the showers and toilets.
We had 1 toilet on the 2nd floor, 2 showers and 1 toilet on the 1st floor, 3 showers/bathrooms on the ground, and two toilets in the bar.
Some people didn't look upstairs, some didn't look downstairs, some didn't realise you could use the bar toilets.
If every one knew where all the showers and toilets were located, that was just enough to get us through in the peak times.
So the answer to your question is, make sure you have separate toilets, showers, and sinks. This will allow you to maximise everything. But having segregated bathrooms if possible is good. A lot of women don't like to do their hair and make up in front of men. Perhaps 2 showers, toilets, sinks per bathroom. Have lots of mirrors in female bathroom and electrical points so they can use their hair dryer.
