Omer Bogger recently brought up a great question about electronic door locks.

Which electric door opening system do you recommended for the hostel and rooms?
- Chips or "wrist watches". Pros/cons
- can you program them with your pms?
- Can you send guests a code to unlock the door with their phone?

Here are some of the companies that have been mentioned before in this Forum for RFID keycards:

Instead of key cards, some hostels choose to use a pin pad where guests enter a code to open the door. The code can be changed daily/weekly/whenever you feel like it. What do you think of this kind of setup?

Which system are you using? Are you happy with it, and would you recommend it for other hostels?

We use VingCard.

Problems (at least with providers in Spain):

- If you are out of cards, it takes them too long to deliver

- Limits of licence (computers in use, cards to issue)

- Not effecent support (once they install the system, there almost no help in adjusting or changing the system)

- A software itself sometimes a little bit glitchy (do not happen a lot, normally solved by restarting the computer)

- Sometimes cards demagnetize (general problem for all cards systems)

- Electronic locks use batteries, if you forget to change them in time, it can result in a great problem (general problem for all electronic locks)

Pros:

- Generaly it works well

- A guest can access their dorm, their locker and enter the hostel using the same card

- Good control of issued cards
