New hostel in Bali...good or bad idea?

I've been wanting to start my own hostel, beach lodge for a long time and i want to know how to do it or how realistic it is to do it. I'm aware Bali is already very overdeveloped tourism wise and there's already a lot of hostels. Also i know in many countries in south east asia you cannot own as a foreigner and i have no desire to go into business with a local *i've heard horror stories of how they screw you over) having said that, i really wonder if it's doable to start a new hostel there.

I'd love to pick your brains, even find a partner who's in a similar situation or even start as a hostel manager and get hands on experience in that environment.

I'm also open to other countries in the area.

Hi Tabatta,

Earlier this year I spent a month in Indonesia and travelled a bit. I spent most of my time on Nusa Lembongan and Komodo NP. I don't have experience in Bali proper, but from my experience in other parts of Indo, hostels as we typically expect them are somewhat rare, homestays are more common but don'tusually have the same amenities we expect from hostels. I think a full featured hostel in some areas I think could be quite profitable if you found the right place. That being said, as far as I know, in Indonesia, like many SEA countries, a foreign investor cannot own majority stake in a business.

I am currently planning and investigating my own hostel/lodging opportunities. Feel free to send me a message if you want to share ideas.
