1st Night Guarantee
When guests arrive at hostels, sometimes their plans have changed, or the hostel is not what they expected. What would you think about allowing guests to change their minds, and giving them a refund if they decide it's not the place for them? They would have 1 night/24 hours (or less) to change their mind, and they would get a refund minus the one night they stayed. If they booked a week, then the refund amount could either be the remaining 6 nights in full, or the refund could be 6 nights at the non-discounted rate, if that makes sense?
I think it would be a great feature for the hostel to have, and would probably give the hostel a boost.
Another way of doing it is similar to HostelWorld's 'Cancellation Protection', where if they pay an extra 10%, or $/£1 a night (for example) at the time of booking, they can get a refund of the above.

Very true, but many hostels don't have that philosophy. I remember staying at one of my first hostels; and I paid for a full week on arrival, and when I got to the room, there was rubbish every where, the bedsheets were not very clean, etc. I spoke to the front desk and I said I would like to checkout, and get a refund, but they said no as I had already paid. They said I could move to a different room. I said I didn't want that, I wanted to get a refund. In the end, all they gave me was a creditnote, which was a bit useless as I wasn't going to stay there again.

Many hostels don´t have any "philosophy" (I hate to use that word for things like this) whatsoever. Many hostel owners are nasty slum landlords.

Was that in London or Paris? :D

Policy for philosophy is a good substitute!
But this hostel was in Brisbane, Australia. I moved the next night to a hostel 50m up, which was better, and cheaper as it so happened. Free internet, large kitchen, swimming pool, great bar, etc.
