For a 10-bed hostel you would probably be fine using Google Docs. It will do everything you mentioned, and it won't cost you a thing. That's what I would use.
Alternatives to Backpack Online?

We're looking for a PMS for our small hostel (10 beds), and so far, Backpack Online from HostelWorld looked like a good choice. Unfortunately, our HW buddy told us that they currently give BPO to hostels with 30+ beds only.
What we're looking for is a web-based, hopefully free solution that would help us monitor bookings, check-ins, staff shifts etc. Is there a property management system aside from BPO that fits the bill? Or are we better off using a Google Docs spreadsheet? :)

My PMS is free to use for Hostels with less than 25 beds. And it is much better than Backpack Online :)

I am wondering if there any videos online about demonstrating BPO or HostelBookers PMS?
I am thinking about using HostelBoookers PMS as we get 80% plus of our bookings through them.
Currently, we use a spreadsheet, which creates a lot of workload for us. I want to see if using HB or HW PMS would make a difference for us.

What this pms does apart from all the things that should do, is that control the place for me, it has an automatic alert system that emials me when I really need to pay attention to the hostel
example: A final chashier diference or a guest account that exceed the credit limit or a guest that has done check out and didnt pay the account.
The software works for me and me ... well I just have fun.

Hi Jamix,
I posted a few months back that I had just fitted a "free" system called Loventis which I find wonderful and in your case it would be very easily implemented. I also added MyAllocator to Loventis this looks after all my Booking agents,allocation,Price changes, Best of all you never double book!
I really enjoy our set-up but the biggest saving is staff time -THE JOINT SYSTEM DOES ALL THE WORK!
