Hello all,
I have been looking at various hostel related ventures in the past couple months. My father was my "job" for the past 6 years. During the last year, he was diagnosed with vascular dementia and hospitalized numerous times. Eventually, he passed away; vascular dementia can be relatively quick compared to Alzheimer's and other types of dementia.
Why am I mentioning this? Because I'm an heir to 90% of his estate. What I'd like to do is get a decent sized building under a favorable lease. For example, I found one in Colombia that was pretty big, in a decent area, and was around $1k/month. The downside was that it needed some rehabbing, but if I could get a long term lease in exchange for getting it rehabbed, it wouldn't be a bad deal.
My vision includes: describing and labeling the hostel as "straight friendly" (I always see "gay friendly", so I'd like to put a spin on it); I'd like to have at least one jacuzzi in it, especially if it's in a cool or cold climate; I'd like to have some kind of bar inside as well, because I know that alcohol attracts people, and it's an additional way to create revenue; a room that is made specifically to house staff and "extra" people, that we see fit to invite perhaps for promotional endeavors or for short-term help.
I am a 41 year old, gay white male. I don't feel 41, whatever that means. I'd like a youthful partner who is lighthearted and quick to laugh, with a good sense of humor who can also understand my comedic sarcasm, yet also be able to manage the various aspects of the hostel. It would be important to fill in the gaps where I lack proficiency, like the skills of a handyman or organizing social events. I have managed a liquor store and bar in a previous life. I have also worked in several different capacities in a restaurant/bar. I would prefer not to sell any food we have to prepare unless someone else wants to take responsibility for that. My idea regarding that is to keep packaged stuff and fresh veggies/fruit on hand and maybe charge a nominal fee if they want to prepare a meal or snack for themselves and others. If they cook for a lot of people, maybe give them their meal free. Lots of possibilities. I'd also like to have a small display of essentials travelers might need in their journeys like: deodorant, soap, sani-naps, toothbrushes/paste, batteries, etc. We can make them expensive, but give registered guests 50% off our products, yet still make a small profit. Again, lots of possibilities. I also was thinking about buying a couple low end digital cameras and letting guests use them for free if they gave us something as collateral and if they gave us the rights to non-personal pictures (they'd get to keep copies for personal use). We can use these to help advertize the hostel and the area.
The purpose of this is to ultimately get me "nudged" in a specific direction. I still have a couple months to go before I finish up odds and ends here and get the remainder of my inheritence. So...there it is: something to chew on and maybe motivate someone.
