This talk about hostel mattresses reminds me of a hostel story... I know a hostel where the owner drives around in a pickup truck with a crew of derelict employees and pulls old mattresses out of garbage dumpsters, including from hospital dumpsters.
When it is time to throw the mattresses out (only in the case of bedbugs, as the mattresses have already been thrown in the trash at least once previously), they are left on the side of the road outside the hostel. Local drug addicts steal the old, discarded mattresses in the middle of the night and then sell them back to the hostel for $20 each.
I've also seen another hostel that sprays their mattresses with garden pesticides (for bedbugs). I'm not sure that is safe...
After those experiences is when I started inspecting mattresses and buying my own plastic covers and mattress pads if my bed's mattress looks or smells even a little funny.
I don't like the sound of rolling around on bare plastic covers, but a nice cloth mattress pad seems to hide the plastic well. I've never been to a hostel that uses mattress covers, but after what I saw I wouldn't be upset to find them...
