Here’s a video by HI New England about Boston Hostel and their need for a new building to accommodate their guests. It does a nice job of showing the positive role that the hostel plays in promoting the city to foreign travelers and educating local youth about foreign cultures.

I really like the idea of the “voluntourism” that they describe starting at 3:39. Does anyone else organize volunteer projects like this?

HI-New England expects to finish its $43 million Chinatown hostel in April. When completed, the employees from the company’s current Boston hostel on Hemenway Street will move to the new location on Stuart Street.

With 468 beds in the new location, the hostel more than doubles in size. HI-New England expects more than 46,000 visitors who can spend up to $16 million each year, according to Ruhe.

I believe that a hostel should be of benefit to the local community - and seen to be so. As we see so often in threads here, the local community, and more specifically the local councils, have no idea what a hostel is all about - let's change that. Get involved.
Here, in the hostel on the south coast of Crete, we have a charity box for when folk say "Keep the change"; this is divided between the Sea Turtle Protection Society and the local Cats & Dogs Protection - we raise over 300 Euro for each every year. The hostel also founded the local book and dvd lending library with more than 10,000 items donated to date. Get involved.

Do you recall Scott Harrington from the unconference here in June last year? He still works for HI Boston.

I remember him, but never got his contact info. I might stop by the Boston Hostel in December...
