I guess you can just forget about *genre* and create playlists adding the artists in ?
I have about 1400 cds that I am trying to store digitally on an external hard drive. Some are so old and have been played so often that I really need to replace them as they keep sticking.
The problem that I have come across is that it is difficult to catalogue them in a sensible way. If one uses Winamp or some other commercial application they seem tied into some organisation that is doing an amazingly bad job of organising albums by genre. For example, all my African and Celtic music automatically gets classed as Reggae!
Who is this organisation? Why can't they hire a few people who know a bit about music. Why do I have to be restricted to 148 or so genres (many that I have never heard of before!)? Why can't they have genres for African and Celtic music? Why is this organisation so AMERICAN - as though no music exists outside their closed minded little world?
Rant over!

Hehe yep, these softwares are not flexible at all, itunes being the least flexible (meaning you cannot customize it to your tastes)

Have you tried Songbird? I'm not sure if it has what you're looking for, but it's based on Firefox and has a lot of extensions that you can download for free.

I just found this program that lets you tag audio files in bulk with any genre:

Thanks everyone. I have now found what I am looking for - I am a happy bunny! Media Monkey is wonderful - the guys that made it must be as anally retentive as I am! Not only can I create whatever genres I want but it can also print out lists of all the music in any format - by artist, by genre, by date, etc; no more typing it all out by hand! Now it is just a matter of time to convert all the cds - I'm trying to do 10 a night.
Here is a first draft of the genres listing that this year's guests will see:
The Hostel Jukebox
We have an “eclectic” (Lonely Planet) collection of music for your listening pleasure. Please feel free to give us your requests.
If you don’t particularly like what we are playing right now then we will change it – to YOUR choice!
Jukebox Genres
To help you choose, the albums have been collected together in genres; maybe not the regular genres that i-tunes or winamp give you!

Chris: the program is fantastic - and it will export selected items as CSV - perfect to be imported to the music-collection catalogue on the hostel webseite :)
