From a guest's perspective I prefer to have free lockers. If there are too many little charges, I think guests don't like it.
What are your thoughts about charging for personal-lockers? I've seen a lot of hostels that charge for use of a locker, either for a small personal safe, or a large locker for a bag.
I was thinking for a small personal safe (which is large enough for cash, iPod, passport, purse, etc) with a hole big enough in the back for an electrical cable to run through so they can charge their digital stuff securely.
Charge on a daily-basis, and if they want a week charge, for 5 days.
Nice little revenue earner. Any thoughts?

I don't like hostels that charge for lockers. They are usually money hungry flashpacker hostels I find. I think the best way to handle this is provide free lockers but with no locks on them. They will have to use their own locks to lock their lockers. If they don't have one, then you can sell the locks. There's your profit.

bolded for the truth.
I think charging for lockers while the guests are staying there is a bit rich (pun sort of intended). A guest shouldnt have to pay extra to keep their stuff safe. That said, providing lockers for guests who have checked out or yet to check in and dont want to leave their valuables in a luggage room is reasonable, provided the lockers are in a common area and safe as... well.. a safe. If you can install a few coin operated lockers - there are a bunch of companies that offer revenue sharing arrangements so you dont actually have to put any money down - and then offer free lockers to in house guests and sell them a padlock or 2, you should be able to get more than enough revenue without really having to compromise on the service itself.
