Another question is -- has anyone here ever had to deal with a massive, uncontrollable bedbug infestation and how did you deal with it? Can it be solved?
There's a Wiki page about bed bugs and pest control that doesn't have any info yet.
Does anyone have recommendations for specific chemicals or procedures for bedbug control that we could add to the Wiki?
Proposed content for the Wiki page -- please provide feedback :)
Chemicals mentioned previously include Pest Master and Solfac Pro.
Gordo had a good tip about rotating chemicals.
Any other tips? After I make a basic outline, anyone will be able to edit the Wiki page.

Hi Hostels, There are some Licensed Pest Control Operators that have trained dogs that can "sniff" out Bed bugs. The LPCO then seals the room and raises the Temp of the room to 140F for 3 1/2 hrs, killing the Bb. The HK staff can inspect for signs of Bb by looking for pin head size tan/brown stains. The Bb defacates the waste from the blood it sucks. The waste also has a slightly sweet smell like coconut oil. I will do some more research on this and post what I find. Like you said it can happen to the best of properties. I have read some hotels have been sued over this issue, this is serious, not to be taken lightly.

That's interesting... I looked it up:
Heat treatment to kill bedbugs:

We recently hired a pest-control company for a room with a bedbug population obviously enjoying the stuff we sprayed on them.
They used McFierce Alphacid Forte, Alpha Cypermethrin. Success.

I wonder if it's available outside of Germany...

Another hint:
A friend who works in one of Vienna´s YHI hostels told me they didn´t get their bugs under control until they sprayed chemicals into the air ducts of the en suite bathrooms. Apparently, the bugs hide in there (and use the air ducts to infest other rooms, too).
Hostel managers everywhere, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!
If there is one thing we really shouldn´t have any business secrets, it´s pest control. Bedbugs have been already eradicated in Western Europe until 15 years ago. We can achieve this again, but only if we work together and share our knowledge.

I agree with that -- sharing info can only benefit hostels in general :)

Unfortunately, most hostel owners want to benefit in particular, not just in general. That´s why we have so many lurkers here.
We can´t afford that with the bugs. The problem gets worse and worse. There are more and more hostels which aren´t aware of the problem and the insects get resistent to the stuff we use. We really have to work together to beat them. A bug-infested competitor is not a competetive advantage for anyone - it´s the source of your next infestation.

I can picture backpackers checking out of their bug infested hostel and then walking over to another hostel in the same city carrying bed bugs with them.
I think I'll make bedbugs one of the topics in the upcoming email newsletter.
