where can i complain in this case ?
there is this type of dirty concurrence , when the concurrent tries to keep your rating down in order to be focused on the top , for the hostel bookers.
he makes the fake bookings , sometimes with a help of his friends , in order to get most of the backpackers himself and to keep the other hostel down.
is there any administrative or criminal responsibility for this ?

If a customer does not show up, you have to cancel the booking right away and there won't be any reviews added. Also you have the right to charge one night of accommodation on the card.
Not any more, or at least in hostelworld, now, as soon as they make a booking...they can already rate you. At least, that's what i have been told...

I run a small apart-hostel in the town where it is very quite on low season.
(17 beds in total )
I think if some one will wait there 24 hours day and night waiting for the tourists its just a madness.
There are a few possibilities to solve the problem.
To make only 24 hours in advance booking , may be by making only private rooms ... no walk ins for low season
or the second solution to rent some rooms for the long term students
So , the receptionist basicly can give the keys to the custommers , and have a free time and her own life , without wasting the 24/7 time at the hostel !
But still I am thiking about workers salary even if she will work as a part-time on this type of conditions.

Hey Peter,
You are not the only one having those smart asses messing with your rating. We also received one 53% bogus reveiw. The guy mentioned his food was stolen from the fridge while we do not really have a fridge :D no lockers, even though our lockers are big enough in order to put his dead body in there and so on... So sick...

We've received a few reviews which were obviously not for us due to things said in the review. Often in our case I think this is just a mistake - travellers are often going to lots of hostels on their trip and then do reviews when they get home - it's easy to mix up places in your memory. Not that this is true in all cases - I'm sure there are people who deliberately leave malicious reviews to hurt competitors.

If we get reviews that are obviously wrong, first we try to get in contact with the "guests", sometimes they just confuse the ratings, e.g. think that "1" is the best ;)
if this doesn't work, we contact our Hostelworld buddy and ask to remove the review, which usually works. Indeed, that has to be a significant wrong review, like the above mentioned "there is no fridge somebody can steal from".

Pretty foolproof IMHO, but some people still get it wrong. :confused:

Follproof? Yes. Sufficient? No.
I still think HW rating system is far from being anywhere close to what I would call decent in order for a hostel to have representative rating.
Nevertheless, people still confuse these smileys even though you can not actually make more comprehensive than that. But I mean, c'mon, if you get people filling in their "nationality" section with "caucasian". What do you expect? I bet those are the ones that confuse :) with :(

Only once when the reviewer said they were in a separate building to the main hostel, and it was filthy. We have no separate building here - all the rooms are in one building. I emailed her and she was kind enough to email HW and ask for the review to be taken off. The ones I hate are the no comment review - I've had people who were very happy, and assured me they were going to leave a glowing review, and then when I've seen the review it just has a percentage and no comment, and been a poor percentage. I personally believe in some of those cases it might be a mistake - ie they meant to leave it for another hostel, but as there is no comment, it's impossible to say.
