Did they? I am not aware of that.
Which hostel is that with a 34% rating? I assume the reviews are good fun to read!
A couple of years ago Hostelworld had minimum ratings. I think it was something like 55%.
Lately I've been seeing hostels listed with really low ratings like 35%. One of the pages on Hostelworld says, "Here are our best rated hostels in [city]:" and the only hostel listed has a 34% rating.
Is there still a minimum and hostels are given period of time to improve, or the minimum is gone? Do the other booking engines have a minimum rating?

i thought they had to have a minimum number of ratings, rather than an actual minimum rating.
but that said, they have changed their rating system a couple of times recently.

I'm trying not to bash any specific hostels online. I want to encourage badly-rated hostels to join HostelManagement.com and improve their hostel reviews. I'll send you a private message though.
I just checked one of the hostels that previously had ratings in the 30s and they are up into the 60s now (3 months improvement). It looks like they are trying.
I remember the minimum ratings because I had started working at a hostel that was less than 10 points from dropping down to the minimum. I started HostelManagement.com during that experience.

I think there should be no minimum ratings, so even hostels that do poorly can know and be reminded how they are ranked? even 30% rating is still a rating, at least the laggards or those unfortunate enough to be so lowly-rated can also know their standing...
I personally think there should be no minimums...just an opinion...

HW doesn't drop off anyone. They are interested to sell all beds including crap ones. The more properties they enlist, the more beds they can sell.
It is your choice if you make a reservation and if you don't like the place where you stay, you can explain it in your review. It is a review based system, and although it isn't perfect, it has over a million (?) reviews, which is impressive, IMHO.
HW also made a revolutionary change in the hostelling industry: brought a more competing, online market to hostels, which enforces most of the hostels into a demand for a higher quality, a rethink of price policy and overall everything which belongs to a need of professionalism. I think the existence of HW helped to accelerate and expand the hostelling industry much faster than anything else before. Also made a brighter, transparent visibility, comparing to the times before ( B.H.: Before Hostelworld :D ).
BUT: HW became a sector with almost no competition. This brings us some non-relaxed moments (What if HW being sold, who cares about hostels, etc.), also some merge with other markets (such as hotels on hostels market). Also it is a private company which should take more responsibility (of the industry), than as the company itself! They (or someone else) should promote backpacking and hostels more than just to advertise themselves!
There is something called STAY-WISE but is there anyone who knows about it? Is it well integrated to the industry at all? I think it was only a weak response to Gomio... IMHO.
I wonder when they gonna register to this forum... So we could have an online discussion partner!

Hey Green Mango,
If you still want to have any beds, then come before July.
Otherwise you can enjoy the same sauna weather until August...Although we still have a good weather in September, when all the wine festivals are around... ;)

STAYWYSE are registered here, but haven't posted to the forums yet :)
I think they are focused more on student travel industry research, not selling beds -- but I could be mistaken. Some of what they do looks like it overlaps with the mission of HostelManagement.com... which is a good thing. The more hostels the better.

Well, I know they read this forum. All you have to do is to stir the shit and write some nasty stuff about them. They´ll register and reply (I have seen that happen in other forums).
Any volunteers? :D
