Does your staff put sheets on beds for clients?

Currently the staff I manage have been putting the bottom sheet on each bed for clients during the morning clean up, and handing the other sheet with the key during check-in. Do you think this is necessary?

I'm wondering if clients even care and it seems to add time away from the front desk.

We don't change the linen for guests who are staying more than one night - we'll wash it on request, or at least once a week. Having said that due to our location we don't get all that many guests staying more than 3 nights.

In theory the guests should have checked out by 1030am, so we should have their sheets by then. usually there are enough piled up to make sure that we are always washing in the morning after 8am. If there is someone really late, I'd just go and strip the bed, and remake it with a spare sheet and duvet cover, and wash the dirty one with the washing the next day. We only have 50 beds, I could see it being much more of an issue in a really big hostel.

We have been running only one month and at the moment we DONT make the beds. Basically we have two reasons for this:

1) Save time and money (we have 90 beds and only 1 at the shift, works well so far)
2) Hygiene. In dorm rooms rooms, there's someone who ALWAYS sits on your bed, unpacks his stuff etc. we tell this to guests as well, they understand. we have had no complaints what so ever so far. If the mattresses get dirty, mattress cover is easy to wash.

For twins,we do the beds of course.

When the guests check out, 95% of them will drop the dirty sheets from the Laundry hole in the wall. Saves a lot of work!

i think making the beds is good because you make sure that they us the sheets

and provide bed bugs from happen me beeing a backpacker i know wat happens if iam tired and i get sheets stuffed in my hand

90 procent of the time they end up next to my bed istead of on them ;)

Guest checks out- maid does rounds at 11AM- strips beds and remakes bed. Sheets, pillowcases are always replaced, Top Blanket often but not everytime.
We tell guest when they arrive," We lend you a towel, leave it on the bed with all the the linen, we take care of it."
If a guest is staying a more than a week we change the sheets and pillow case on the 7th day or anytime they request a change. Some will ask for another towel before the week 2 or 3 times and we do that to.
Late check-outs, no worries, we just do that bunk a bit later. If to late in the day we wash them the next day.
It looks so much better that way, as a traveler myself, I never liked staying in a dorm and looking at naked mattresses. Sometimes some mattresses look bad or are stained. better to have a sheet on them.

Yes - we make beds completely each morning for a number of reasons.

1. The guests appreciate it.
2. The room looks better.
3. A lazy guest won't just sleep on a bare mattress when they come back from the pub at 2:00am.
3. Less chance of guests using their own bedding with the possibility of bed bugs.

But we hand out towels on arrival. We found if they are left on the beds, other guests in the dorm borrow them when they left theirs in the shower.

Towels issued on arrival ... The only way, and thats still not fool-proof.
another , is when the guest needs two pillows
or complains, After taking a bed cover off another bunk, that the air-con was too cold. lol
You only really notice it when another guest who is assigned that bed arrives, which is a sure thing to happen in the AM hours it seems.

We put the bottom sheet on here, and we simply put the top sheet folded at the end of the bed, and the bed spread and pilow at the top. We found when we stoped making the bed in a traditioonal way, (top sheet, bottom sheet, blancket and pillow) we got less stains on our bedspreads from people throwing there packs on the bed. Seems that people dont want the pack grime on their sheets.

I aslo have my concerns regarding this. Beds made the day before can get used overnights, by backpacks or even people who wants a nicer view from their bunks. It will make you send your sheets to laundry much more often.

I think it's a sign of professionalism if a hostel makes up your bed for you. I now expect my bed to be made up when I arrive in hostels. And in my experience, I find a lot of people are too lazy to make their beds, so they just sleep on the mattress.

I think the minimum should be the bottomsheet should be on the bed, and the guest can do the rest. As long as that is done, I am happy with that. In most Australian hostels, you have to pay a refundable key/security deposit of AU$20, which you get back when you checkout, and bring your sheets down to reception for cleaning. If you are that concerned about guests packing and unpacking on vacant beds, provide a table for them in the room, and/or put up notices saying not to use the vacant beds as they could be in use at any time. Add as well, if they are not happy with their bed and want to move, please inform reception, and reception will sort it out. Most guests will oblige.
