Greek Hostels / Hostel Owners
Hello
Are there any Greek hostel owners who can tell me about some of the laws and regulations in Greece as I hear it is rather difficult to open a hostel in Greece. Also I hear that "hostels in greece need to be non-profit as well? is this true ?
So if there are any Greek Hostels owners who can advise that would be great.
Thanks
Jon

Many areas in Italy have the problem of getting a hostel licence. It doesn't depend on the national government but instead the decision is taken by the local "comune" or city council.
Many hostels are forced to open with a hotel or other type of licence and then they run the activity as a hostel.
I think that there should be an independent hostel body that can serve as a lobby group to help potential new hostel owners get around difficult local laws and help them open up their activity.

A few years ago I enlisted the help of the European Hostel Co-operation (GOMIO) to lobby the Greek Government. The document, which took months to prepare, was totally ignored.
The EHC were very helpful.

Do you still have a copy of that document?

Yes, but I have since prepared a better and stronger paper based on newer data. I am now looking for a way to make sure it gets read by someone in authority.
Happy to send you a copy if you PM me your mail address.

I sent you a PM with my email address. I am currently looking for ways to help hostels like yours to have a voice and be able to contact people in authority. I'll send you details soon

You should have received my presentation by now. Hopefully you can open it.
You may find some of the data for Italy and Greece a little inaccurate. I blame Stefano of HW for being over zealous in his job and listing every small town on HW even if they had no accommodation! Italy and Greece took longer than all the other European countries put together!
For Italy there could well be many properties that are listed as hostels but only have private rooms. For Greece there are many hostels that I know that do not have an HW listing - or even internet for that matter - so the total of independent hostels is greater than that shown on HW.
I would welcome your feedback.

I received your email - thank you!! It looks very interesting. I just need to take some time later tonight to sit down and read everything.
Then I'll give you some feedback

Hello there,
and thanks for giving me the opportunity to dig in so much information regarding hostels.
Basically i am posting this because i want to start a hostel in Greece and it struck me as Plakian has resources about the Greek legislation for hostels. Or more accurately the Greek legislation for not allowing you to start a hostel. I would be grateful if anyone of you were able to mail to me or PM to me any information in regards to starting a hostel in Greece.
Thank you in advance
