the appalling state of north american public transport probably doesnt help that.In Australia the same. If you go on public transport from Melbourne to Darwin you hardly see any of the worthwhile sights. But there are lots of backpacker-type tours, and they are by far the best way to see Uluru, the Flinders Ranges, Coober Pedy etc. So maybe that is what is lacking in N America, together with hostels -- the two of them support each other. (They certainly do in Australia, sometimes aggressively.)
yeah, inland transport is almost non-existant and theres the tyranny of distance. green tortoise does a tour up the west coast of the states (or at least between their 2 hostels in seattle and san fran) whilst i can think of at least 3 groups who run up and down the east coast of oz. theres also a big market for vans and campers for backpackers who want to drive themselves - wicked campers is a big one, and theyve now moved into the UK.
perhaps the US needs an equivalent? but then it doesnt really have the absurdly popular route like the east coast of oz...
